Nevada: The Week That Was

The Wolf Pack crushed a bad New Mexico State team, 63-20, in Las Cruces, N.M. Nevada might have stumbled out of the gate in September with three consecutive losses, but ever since coach Chris Ault’s club entered the conference section of its schedule, its vaunted pistol offense has been running up scores and yardage totals. This past weekend against the Aggies, Nevada posted an obscene total of 574 rushing yards on its way to a 49-6 lead with just four minutes gone in the third quarter. The Wolf Pack’s rushing prowess has enabled the team to produce three 1,000-yard rushers this season. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua had already cracked four-figure rushing totals on the year, but when running back Luke Lippincott busted loose for 162 yards on 19 carries against New Mexico State, he also joined the “1,000 Club.”

Boise State: The Week That Was

The Broncos weren’t sharp in Logan, Utah… not for the first 25 minutes of last Friday’s game against a Utah State team that entered Romney Stadium with only three victories. With five minutes left in the second quarter, Boise State could only manage a 14-14 tie with the homestanding Aggies. But then, someone flipped the switch in the Broncos’ huddle.
A sluggish offense revved up its engines, and one key fumble recovery enabled Boise to score two touchdowns in 43 seconds to gain a 28-14 advantage with 4:04 remaining in the first half. That brief explosion turned the tide on the scoreboard, but the sequence also mentally liberated coach Chris Petersen’s sleepwalking team, which was understandably trying to coast against a weak opponent. With this Nevada game looming on the schedule, the Broncos didn’t want to get fancy, and Utah State’s fumble allowed BSU to achieve its main objective.

The Week That Is:

It’s the battle for the WAC championship on the blue smurf turf of Boise, but obviously, this game means so much more for the Broncos. Boise State has to play another game on Dec. 5, but that contest comes against the same New Mexico State squad Nevada just drummed into the ground. This is Boise State’s last legitimate hurdle on the way to an unbeaten record and a possible ticket to a BCS bowl game. The Broncos have at times struggled in their attempt to maintain focus against the weak sisters of the WAC. Boise State’s young men, being human, have wandered here and there, playing a little too close to the edge against the likes of Tulsa and Louisiana Tech. But now that the WAC game of the year has arrived, expect the same BSU defense that smothered Oregon on Sept. 3 to re-emerge. Expect Bronco quarterback Kellen Moore to play his best game. Expect a convincing romp over a good, but not great, Nevada team which struggled early in the season against quality opposition.
