Stanford To Keep Rolling Against California

Seemingly out of nowhere come the Stanford Cardinals on the back of Toby Gerhart, the next “white hope” at tailback. They’ve toppled Oregon and destroyed USC and now stand as dark horse favorites to roll their momentum train right in to the Pac-10 championship. California can’t feel too good coming off a narrow win against Arizona, and watching game tape of Stanford’s enormous 106-point total in the past two games.

The sudden smash-mouth wins that Stanford is capable of handing out are thanks to the emergence of Gerhart, who has 1,395-yards and 19 touchdowns this season including multiple-touchdown games in their rousing victories against ranked opponents. California can’t be too excited about seeing what Gerhart is capable of up close since they give up 123.0 yards per game on the ground. Stanford is undefeated in five home games this season, and the Bears are just 5-12 ATS in their last 17 road trips.

The Bears will also be without a star running-back of their own as Jahvid Best continues to nurse a concussion suffered a while back. Coach Tedford has said there’s literally “no chance” of seeing Best this weekend, which means the Bears won’t be at their best either. The Bears’ offense ranks 45th overall with 234.5 passing yards and 146.5 rushing yards gained per game.

Stanford, simply put, is the hottest team in the country right now. They’re moving up the BCS board, in to the Pac-10 title hunt and they now have a star player contending for the Heisman. All of these make them a dangerous team, especially if they continue to play with a chip on their shoulder. Don’t count on Cal giving Gerhart or Stanford any troubles this weekend. Though Stanford is just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 tries while hosting California, they are a much different team this season. And that’s something to bank on.
